Name: Nemesis
Canon: Nemesis the Warlock, one of several stories published in comics anthology 2000 AD. He shares continuity with the likes of Judge Dredd and the ABC Warriors, though even further in the future than they.
Synopsis:
In the far-flung future Earth, now known as Termight (as it is mighty Terra), is both a ruined wreck and the centre of a vast intergalactic empire built on the fanatical belief in the eradication of all alien life. Millions of rabid Terminators traverse the stars purifying planets of all they consider deviants- which is everyone who is not a human being. Their only opposition is Credo, the freedom fighting organisation led by the mysterious extraterrestrial from the furthest reaches of space, the Nether Worlds- Nemesis the Warlock! He wages war against the Terminators and their nefarious leader Tomás de Torquemada, the Grand Master of Termight.
Appearance:
Nemesis' looks are extremely similar to those of an Earthly depiction of a demon, huge, horned, cloven hoofed and clawed. The grating on his neck is in fact his mouth. Though most often appearing with green skin (or scales or whatever it is he has), he changes skin colour as often as he does clothes which is to say frequently.
Personality:
The best way to define Nemesis is that he is alien. He simply does not think as humans do in almost any respect. When he thinks of good or evil, which is rarely, he doesn't consider one to be superior to the other though he certainly understands the difference between them. Unlike humans, his baseline for weighing actions is not good or bad but orderly or chaotic (or Khaotic as he would put it, for reasons elaborated on below). His preference lands very much upon chaos, and he describes himself as believing in the oldest, greatest force of all time- nothing. His philosophies are, in his own words, about having a good time.
That said is he is unfailingly polite and friendly, a gentleman in every way but his goals. Often with a dry wit and a cheery turn of phrase, adding a touch of class to even his most devious of machinations. Perhaps it is all a part of his cosmic joke, to be a well dressed and mannered demon.
To that end he can play elaborate roles for his games and for decades has taken on the character of a noble hero out to avenge injustices against the universe at large and protecting lives that he couldn't actually care less about. In particular, he notes he has minimal regard for the humans he claims to be fighting on behalf of, comparing them unfavourably to termites, scrambling around in desperate but meaningless lives... but finding it fun to prod their nest. He likes things as they are with the maddest inmate in charge of the asylum just so he can feud with him. Risking his life is nothing but a strange joke no human could get, often limiting himself to ensure he gets to enjoy the thrill of near-death experiences.
Despite his claim to believe in nothing, he apparently worships an entity named Khaos (Khaos is a way of life or he is an aspect of Khaos, he's deliberately vauge on it). He finds order offensive and simply enjoys following his whims. He's fully capable of going through with elaborate plans and schemes, but never feels bound to them. They're all just games to him. In an odd paradox, he is even willing to betray the principles of Khaos if it furthers his own enjoyment. He, for example, arranges for Earth to be saved from destruction (an orderly act) just to ensure he can wreak havoc there against his arch-enemy.
However, this does not mean he is without care or concern. It's just severely limited to whom he extends it. He seems to love his first wife dearly (his second somewhat less) and he goes through a great deal for his son. He is also especially fond of his living spacecraft, Seth. Threats to those elicit an incredibly seldom seen fury that is terrifying to behold.
He has quite the inflated opinion of himself, justified or not. He occasionally compares himself to a god or devil- undoubtedly appropriate for his habit of making games of the lives of mortals. Always preferring drama to safety, he acts a large ham and adds theatre to anything he can.
Abilities:
Nemesis possesses vast but undefined magical powers. Common things he does without spell casting are hiding his appearance behind a psychic aura, mesmerising minds, altering memories, telekinesis, levitation, creating ectoplasmic duplicates of himself and creating demons from his mind. When he takes the time to prepare a spell, he can achieve much more impressive things, such as whipping up natural disasters, opening up portals, transforming people into other lifeforms or wrapping a planet in a psychic sheath to reflect evil thoughts back on their thinkers.
Magic aside, Nemesis is one tough cookie. Though he doesn't appear to be too dreadfully durable, he seems to be able to recover from practically any wound short of instant deathblows. When devoid of his magic powers, he's still a dangerous warrior with claws that can tear steel and hooves that can smash stone. The sword sinister, Excessus, is his signature weapon-a blade made from a super dense material from a Netherworld sun. He's rarely seen without it, but when he is, it's probably still there in disguise. He has the seemingly natural ability to spit balls of fire, slime and acid (though he can run out if used in too rapid a succession). He's also immune to heat and fire, often bathing in lava. Despite all this, he can probably be shot or stabbed to death.
Most of the time, Nemesis limits his own powers to ensure he experiences the exhilaration of potential failure- he really can't get enough of near-death experiences, thinking of them like big jokes. This can backfire at times and end up with the joke on him.
He is rarely without his most faithful companion, Seth the Blitzspear. While appearing to be a spaceship, Blitzspears are in fact an animal that shares ancestry with Warlocks. Seth can nevertheless carry Nemesis all across the universe with ease. The vastly more powerful and mysterious Milchspear serves as Nemesis' mother ship but is seldom seen.
It doesn't come up much, but he's 'the same person' as Deadlock the ABC Warrior. They started separate and became one at some point, but exist simultaneously. It's not elaborated on much.
